CAMAGÜEY.— The Neurology specialty, affiliated with the Dr. Carlos J. Finlay University of Medical Sciences in Camagüey, is preparing for an institutional evaluation process by Cuba’s National Accreditation Board, with the Manuel Ascunce Domenech Provincial Clinical-Surgical Teaching Hospital serving as its main teaching facility.

Dr. Rodolfo Emilio Domínguez Rosabal, director of the hospital, explained that the neurology service provides 24-hour emergency and urgent care and includes an inpatient ward for hospitalized patients.

He highlighted that this specialty—highly costly in many countries but fully accessible and free of charge in Cuba—aims to join others that already hold Centers of Excellence status, such as Cardiology, Nephrology, Plastic and Burn Surgery, Internal Medicine, Intensive and Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Urology, Maxillofacial Surgery, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology, and General Surgery.

Dr. Yaneisy Frómeta Olivera, first-degree specialist in Comprehensive General Medicine and Neurology, noted that residents and specialists provide outpatient consultations across all municipalities in the province of Camagüey, maintaining close collaboration with the Imaging Department for the performance of essential diagnostic studies.

She also mentioned the specialized clinics for Movement Disorders and Dementia, both with a regional impact, as they serve patients from Camagüey and neighboring provinces.

Additionally, she highlighted the project “Learning to Live with Parkinson’s”, held at the birthplace of Dr. Carlos J. Finlay, which brings together patients and their families to learn about medications, dietary habits, and exercises suitable for managing the disease.

Currently, cerebrovascular diseases—both ischemic and hemorrhagic—and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s constitute the most prevalent neurological conditions among the Camagüey population, she concluded.
