CAMAGÜEY.— In celebration of World Environment Day, the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), which oversees best practices in green spaces in Camagüey, granted awards to entities and individuals with outstanding contributions to the care and preservation of the ecosystem in the region.
The event was held at the Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz Airport Business Unit (UEB), which received the 2024 Territorial Environmental Recognition for implementing measures and policies that ensure the conservation of the environment. At the same venue, the National Environment Award was presented to the Camagüey Fuel Transportation Business Unit and to Miozotis Fabelo Pinares, journalist from Radio Cadena Agramonte, for their contributions to preventing, mitigating, or solving nature-related problems.
For their work in eliminating negative impacts on natural areas and public health, as well as in the repurposing of infrastructure, the environmental efforts of the Environmental Safety Regulatory Office, the Environmental Engineering Center, the Máximo Gómez Báez Polytechnic Institute, the Department of Pedagogical Training, Professional Development and Scientific Activity of the Ministry of Education, and the Agroindustrial Grain Company Ruta Invasora were highlighted.
Other local organizations were also honored, including the Environmental Research Center, the Provincial Meteorological Center, the Forest Ranger Corps, the Civil Defense Authority, the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians, and the Department of the State Forestry Service of the Ministry of Agriculture.
“Today we continue to face the consequences of the abuse and exploitation of our ecosystems. The actions taken by humanity still fall short of what the planet Earth demands. In response to the dangers threatening humanity, Cuba has prepared and developed strategies to counter them under the framework of Tarea Vida (Life Task),” said Irma Martín Sánchez, CITMA’s Deputy Delegate for the Environment.
At the event, the municipality of Vertientes was granted the status of Pro-Environmental Municipality for its efforts to address climate change, aligned with the National Environmental Strategy 2021–2025.
The ceremony was presided over by Walter Simón Noris, First Secretary of the Communist Party in the region, and Jorge Enrique Sutil Sarabia, Governor of the territory. They presented a recognition to CITMA’s regional office, accepted by its new delegate, Yosvani Julio Miranda Batista, for its outstanding national leadership in environmental care, contributions to natural resource management, and actions to combat the climate crisis.
