CAMAGÜEY.- A plant for the production of gofio is the being installed in this city, which will have a production capacity of about four tons every month, that will go to the different internal markets in the country.

Right now the conditions are being created for the adaptation of five sheds to house the future industry; its complete equipment is in the Cuban capital, reported Luis Monteagudo Castillo, technologist in the Coffee Roasting and Commercialization Company, entity to which the new facility will submit.

To assume the new offer, he added, “we have the necessary staff, and in a later moment our Base Company Unit, the most stable one nationally, will process the coffee in those facilities having better conditions and without affecting the surroundings.

The food will be packed in lithographed nylon of 250, 500 and a thousand grams, and it can be adquired in several flavors, from natural to milk and chocolate, and will become an important option for the national consumer.

As it is known, the country is working not only in the import substitution, but also in the line of increasing the delivery of various foods to the population.

Of Gofio: benefits and properties.

If you are looking for alternative foods to those you usually see in the supermarket, then why don’t you try gofio? It is a food that comes from the grinding, the mechanical milling of toasted grain, that can come from different cereals. That way, they form a flour that usually is made of wheat, rye or corn. It is very common in Canary Islands but also across the world in America.

Gofio is rich in nutrition values, but it depends on the toasting process and the composition of the cereal itself. It is fair to say that it it contains a lot of zinc, magnesium and iron, vitamins of the complex B (B1, B2 and B3), vitamins A and D and, among other minerals, we can point out phosphorous, magnesium, potassium and copper.

It contains high levels of potassium and sodium, therefore if you suffer from any kidney problem you have to be careful. Gofio also contains a lot of fiber, almost 2 grams for every 100 of gofio, and we already know that fiber is very good for the organism, the functioning of intestines and the cholesterol.

It is a recommended food for treating and avoiding the cases of constipation in a natural way. Its fiber content, and the omega 6 fatty acids also make it favorable for the heart health, since it helps reducing the bad cholesterol levels and the triglycerides and cooperates with the reduction and elimination of the fat accumulated in the arteries, protecting their health.

By having complex carbohydrates, it delays their absorption thus helping the organism to control the glucose levels in blood, making it a suitable food for people with diabetes. That very reason makes it an energetic food because, since given its slow absorption, it provides a constant source of energy for the body. It is a low-fat food but it has an important satiating effect.

Gofio is also fit for celiac people given the fact that when the grains is toasted the proteins that contain the amino acid that form the gluten after ingested, is dehydrated and then denatured.

Meanwhile, because of its sodium and potassium contents, it is not a food recommended for people with kidney problems.
