CAMAGÜEY.- The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games concluded this Sunday after two weeks of competitions and stories of personal improvement that crowned the People's Republic of China in the country rankings.

An incredible harvest of 96 titles, 60 silver and 51 tanned medals placed the Asian giant's delegation at the top, followed by Great Britain (41-38-45) and the United States (37-36-31), which finished in the last day to the Russian representation (36-33-49).

Brazil, in seventh place with 22 golds, 20 silvers and 30 golds, and Mexico, in step 20 with 7-2-13, completed the Top3 of America along with the Americans. Cuba finally occupied the 35th place in the medal table with four titles, a subtitle and a third place. The other Latin American nations that achieved at least one medal were Colombia (3-7-14), Venezuela (3-2-2), Chile (2-3-1), Costa Rica (1-1-0), Ecuador (1-0-2), Peru (1-0-0), Argentina (0-5-4) and El Salvador (0-0-1).

Three of the Cuban gold metals went to the account of the runner Omara Durand, who was confirmed as the fastest parathlete in history by dominating the 100, 200 and 400 flat meter tests of the T12 category (deep visual weaknesses) and maintaining an undefeated ten-year-old who has earned her eight championships under five rings. On the last date another award came to the sprinter from Santiago when she was elected a member of the Athletes' Council of the International Paralympic Committee that will run until the Paris 2024 edition.

Precisely the organizers of the Parisian event received the Paralympic flame in a beautiful closing ceremony that closed an Olympic and Paralympic sports cycle marked by the COVID-19 pandemic that even threatened to prevent the celebration of the Games.
