CAMAGÜEY — In recognition of his career, solidity, and scholarly rigor in the creation of journalistic, graphic, and audiovisual materials that promote and disseminate history, the Camagüey branch of the Cuban Union of Historians (Unhic) awarded the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Certificate of Recognition to the Camagüey intellectual Jorge Santos Caballero.
The ceremony took place at the Café Literario La Comarca, headquarters of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) in this province.
The distinction was granted to the prominent critic and researcher following the conclusion of Pluralidades, a space he founded on September 28th, 2006, and which has since continued as a monthly meeting held every second Tuesday, aimed at interviewing cultural figures from both the region and the nation to foster debate and explore the local cultural landscape.
“Throughout this initiative, we’ve welcomed national award winners in literature, history, editing, and research — figures who have left an indelible mark on our nation’s cultural history. I chose the name Pluralidades because diversity of thought is essential. We defend the Revolution, but from different perspectives,” said Santos Caballero, who on this occasion invited Kenny Ortigas Guerrero, director of the Camagüey Provincial Directorate of Culture, to join the conversation.
During the dialogue, they discussed topics such as the current cultural policy in Cuba, the influence of culture on civic ethics, and the role of institutions and families in shaping values among younger generations. They also emphasized the importance of collaboration among cultural entities to strengthen artistic development in the province.
Ortigas Guerrero noted, “It’s not enough to have a good cultural program — we need a strategy that ensures consistency, not sporadic efforts. We must improve the preparation of our cultural managers, better inform the public about upcoming activities, and participate more actively in international cooperation projects and productive partnerships with institutions, among other priorities.”
The event also served as the occasion for the Provincial Directorate of Culture to present Santos Caballero with a guayabera (typical Cuban shirt) and a postcard sent by the Office of the President of the Republic, in recognition of his contributions to the development of Cuban culture.
