CAMAGÜEY.- The main sequelae left by SARS-CoV-2 in Camagüey's children are psychological: behavior and sleep disorders, anxiety, restlessness and lack of concentration, results supported by multidisciplinary follow-up consultation that takes place on the last Friday of each month in the Outpatient Center of the Eduardo Agramonte Piña Pediatric Hospital.

Dr. Yamina Rivero Fernández, 2nd degree specialist in Pediatrics, from that hospital, assures that: “We continue with the evaluation of recovered children, after recognition of a team in their Health areas, in that multidisciplinary consultation where they are attended by psychologists, physiatrists, cardiologists, neurologists and those who are necessary, as appropriate. The attention is personalized and with their relatives, which is only possible in a country like ours with an inclusive social system ”.

The two seriously treated patients, who belonged to Ciego de Ávila, one of them with infantile cerebral palsy and the other infant, returned to their province after discharge from hospital.

"We have evidence that no sex stands out, but the ages that mostly range between 10 and 18 years," she added.

The increase in children suffering from COVID-19 in Cuba is indisputable, and the province of Camagüey is no exception.

In the first stage, Yamina said, from March 23 to July 18 of last year, 21 confirmed and 10 were treated for suspicion that they had the disease of Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey, while in the second, framed between September 3, 2020 and March 17 of this year those confirmed amount to 366.

During the first stage in the province of Camagüey, only seven children were diagnosed - five from the main municipality and two from Florida - the rest were from Ciego de Ávila and two foreigners (French), all treated at the Octavio de la Concepción y La Pedraja military hospital, as it is currently the case.

The increase has been evident and the also Master in Infectology and Assistant Professor and one of the experts  charged from the beginning of the health situation to support those who fight the pandemic from the Red Zone, said that some children have faced the disease with greater complexity due to other associated ailments such as bronchopneumonia, although the result has been favorable.

“The evaluation of recovered children continues, but there is something vital and it is to make a call towards the risk perception, this cannot be neglected, emphasized Yamina Rivero. Our children and adolescents must be preserved, we adults assume that responsibility, and we must be very clear that no one is exempt from complications.

“This year, she commented, we have treated 17 children under one year of age, and even less than three months old, and it is known that in extreme ages the danger is much greater. Our population must comply with the targeted measures, this is the only way to minimize the impact of the disease, and I reiterate, our children and our adolescents are our responsibility ”.

In recognizing in a special way her colleagues involved in the Red Zone in the face of COVID-19, Dr. Yamina expressed that if the population takes care of itself, it protects Health professionals, those who day by day surrender at the risk of their own lives.
