In this 2015 they foresee to wrap up the rehabilitation of the platform and the covering, for the next year to direct the investment to the interior lounges and the improvement of the city image in the bordering areas, from Santa Rosa up to Rosario streets, between which there is nearly one kilometer of distance.

José Rodríguez Barreras, director of the OHCC, mentioned that the initiative is in congruity with the repair and development of this way of transport in Cuba, under the concept of supporting it in the historical environment of the city of Camagüey, whose most ancient area was declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It is a costly project, added Rodríguez, that intends to preserve the fundamental services of the station, and simultaneously to turn it into a museum, in which there recreates the evolution of once town of Santa María del Puerto del  Príncipe, tied to the development of the railroad.

The official reported that, before kicking off the constructive works, consultations were realized to the community, so that the inhabitants knew the targets of the project and were offering opinions, and there were convened those who had documents and photos of previous epochs to donate them to the future explanatory lounges.

From next June the OHCC also will direct part of its efforts to the restoration of the ¨trapiche¨, the ancient shop for white persons and the slaves' barrack of the sugar plant El Oriente located in the municipality of Sibanicú, considered to be a monument of the sugar industry in the territory.
