CAMAGÜEY — On the 37th anniversary of the death of Nicolás Guillén Batista, the Camagüey chapter of the Cuban Journalists Association (UPEC) presented the awards for the Fifth Nicolás Guillén Chronicle Competition and Symposium, an event dedicated to Cuba’s National Poet.

Held at the House of the Press, the gathering brought together journalists and Journalism students from the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz. Participants also paid tribute to the late Adolfo Silva Silva, an outstanding chronicler, mentor to generations of journalists, and the founder and driving force behind the event.

 Carmen Luisa Hernández Loredo, a member of UPEC’s provincial executive committee and head of the newsroom at Adelante newspaper, said Silva’s perseverance was instrumental in sustaining the event through his unwavering commitment to the chronicle as a genre capable of portraying society—an approach she described as central to the mission of journalism today.

 Nearly 20 entries were evaluated by the jury, which presented awards in five categories. In Print Journalism, the top prize went to Liban F. Espinosa Hechavarría for Hurricane of Hope, published in Ahora newspaper in Holguín.

The Radio award was presented to Lisvany Martín Rodríguez of Villa Clara for Melissa’s Fury, while the Audiovisual category recognized Carmen y Martí: A Love Story, by María del Carmen Fuentes Pérez and Lázaro Ernesto Torres of Televisión Camagüey.

In the Hypermedia category, Arianna Suárez Torres of Radio Nuevitas received the award for her work On the 37th Anniversary of Nicolás Guillén Batista’s Passing.

 As part of the celebrations marking the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, a special award was presented to the chronicle that best reflected the life and legacy of the Cuban leader. The honor went to Fidel’s Imprint on the Cuban Medical Brigade in Venezuela, by Mayelyn Brage Viamontes of Radio Nuevitas.

 The jury, chaired by Avianny Delgado Herrera, praised the high quality of the entries submitted from several provinces across the country. Members highlighted the competition’s role in showcasing the value of the chronicle, a demanding journalistic genre that champions thoughtful observation, careful reflection, and purposeful storytelling in today’s media landscape.

 The Fifth Nicolás Guillén Chronicle Competition and Symposium pays tribute to Cuba’s National Poet while forming part of the program of activities organized by UPEC in Camagüey to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the organization’s founding.
