CAMAGÜEY.- The Carlos J. Finlay University of Medical Sciences of Camagüey (UCMC) resumed its teaching activities this week with the fundamental premise of maintaining quality in the training of professionals in the health sector.
With an enrollment of more than 5,000 undergraduate students and nearly 1,400 residents in the different medical specialties of Dentistry and Nursing, the second period of the course for Higher Education restarted on the 4th, and at the same time it started for Technical Education with students who come from ninth grade.
"We have many motivations, the school celebrated 43 years since it was created by Fidel, and it is involved in the new challenges that higher education and the sciences take on, to raise the scientific level and the training of its faculty," Tamara Chaos Correa, rector of the institution explained to Adelante Digital.
It is an accredited university, with three majors and 19 accredited postgraduate programs. It also has an enrollment of 121 foreign students, of 25 nationalities, and they are evaluating a group of collaboration agreements in different regions. These days they are saying goodbye to 50 graduates from Congo, and this year they already had students from Norway and Mexico in the postgraduate program, and next year they intend to bring in residents from other countries.
"A new door is opening with Mexico, we must begin to receive residents of the Ophthalmology specialty, and a projection for next year of students who join the third year of Medicine.
"We are one of the universities projected to receive young people from the Latin American School of Medicine in the clinical area by 2024."
The UCMC also has excellent links with the Provincial Health Directorate and other institutions, addressing problems in the sector such as the maternal and child program and care for the elderly.
Organizations such as the University Student Federation and the Young Communist League have great support from the faculty and the center's management, in key areas of work at the university, especially in the area of research, since the goal is to achieve in the students not only their scientific training, but the values that are needed today in professionals in the sector.
The school is also incorporated into the movement in the province with a view to the city's 510th birthday, finding itself immersed in an important group of works to improve comfort and settings for students and teachers.
"There is a large repair and maintenance movement in areas that have to do with the student residence, there we are going to increase 160 capacities, an intervention has been made in the gym and board for extension activity. Thanks to an agreement with the Provincial Center of Books and Literature, we opened the Literary Café a year ago, we also created a children's house to care for the children of our students and working mothers," added the rector.
With all these motivations and tasks, the teaching period begins at the Camagüey medical university, which seeks to continue being a reference center with a positive impact on Camagüey society.
