CAMAGUEY.- With attractive natural values to promote ecotourism, the creation of the Sierra de Cubitas National Geopark is planned, located just under 30 kilometers north of this city, sponsored by the Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA by its Spanish acronym) in the province of Camagüey.

The Antonio Núñez Jimeenez Foundation is preparing the schedule for the implementation of this initiative, which is included among the local development projects of the territory, focusing on the Limones Tuabaquey Ecological Reserve.

Since the first quarter of this year, a group of specialists and academics have been working on the preparation of a dossier to materialize the idea, which also includes an Interpretation Center in the Cueva del Indio area.

Eduardo Labrada, a specialist of the aforementioned Foundation recalled that since early 20th century most of the young people used to go to that area to bathe in the waters of the caves, and that the idea of creating a large park was proposed by the heroine of our Revolution, Celia Sanchez, in 1959.

The project will allow in the near future to coordinate actions for the proper management of the Geopark and implement programs of knowledge and scientific research, environmental education, community development and geotourism, which will contribute to improve the welfare and standard of living of the communities that will interact with the site.

The area of about 3.7 square kilometers extends from the Cueva del Indio and Portales del Pinto, geosites that are National Heritage sites, to other caves of great beauty and geographic features such as Hoyo de Bonet and Los Paredones, examples of the geological history of the Sierra de Cubitas.
