CAMAGÜEY.- The beekeepers of this province are committed to continue the contributions of honey for export. In July, they took the lead in the seven-month plan, of the 358 tons they finished with 400 and an economic contribution of more than 600 thousand dollars.

The result is due to the work of 259 beekeepers settled in 48 base productive entities, scattered in the thirteen municipalities, among which Vertientes, Najasa, Santa Cruz del Sur and Minas report higher deliveries.

Added to honey production are wax, propolis, Reyna's bee and the growth of hives, with a total figure of 17,029 units; of these 914 in the present 2020, the engineer Omelio Barba, director of the Base Business Unit of the National Beekeeping Company, highlighted Adelante Digital.

The honey that is collected in Camagüey's territory is processed in the Contramaestre beneficiation plant, in the province of Santiago de Cuba -one of the three existing in the country-; and then grouped into batches, according to humidity and color.

Still distant from the record of 1080 tons, reported in 1983, the people of Camagüey do not renounce that figure and they are demonstrating it with the 833 they achieved in 2019 to remain in the peloton of those that produce the most in Cuba, led by Matanzas, Villa Clara , Sancti Spíritus and Granma. Two dangerous enemies for myeliferous development are drought and cyclones, because they affect the loss of flowering, the place where bees feed.

Sources consulted indicate that in the international market there has been a drop in the prices of a ton of honey: from 3,300 euros per ton has decreased to a range that fluctuates between 1,200 and 1,300.

Honey has been used for thousands of years around the world, either as a flavoring for concoctions, foods or medicines due to its antibacterial potential, antioxidant, properties to sweeten, moisturize, in digestive processes, in treating wounds and burns, in alleviating the cough and burns and as an anti-inflammatory.
