CAMAGÜEY.- The convocation for enriching the program Environment and Sustainable Territorial Development, aimed at contributing with the mitigation of the effects of climate change, the protection of natural resources and to favor a prosperous economical and social development in the region, was made from the Convention Center Santa Cecilia, with the presence of environmental institutions in the city.
The project was presented by its coordinator and worker of the Center of Environmental Research in the province (Cimac), Josefa Primelles Fariñas, who highlighted the fundamental role of science and technology to generate development before the adversities of nature and to spread these practices to the municipalities.
Among the main objectives pursued by the initiative, the specialist referred to the strengthening and integration of systems of environmental information, surveillance and early alert, the improvement of the qualities of the ecosystems, human settlements and socioeconomic sectors from the effective use of natural resources and the participation of citizens based on a sustainable culture.
“The investigations effected during this process, that will comprehend from 2020 to 2030, must have a transdimensional character. It has to be nurtured from different points of view, effected in an integrated way, to offer various responses to the same problem. That is the most efficient way to get great accomplishments”, stated Primelles Fariñas.
With the application of the plan, it is expected results such as the decrease of the degradation index of the soils, diversification of crops, the improvement of the environmental quality of shore ecosystems, the reduction of the number of houses and the demographic density in threatened shore settlements, the recovery of mangrove surface, the increase of exportations and the substitution of imports.
The chief of the environment unit in the Citma, Lisbet Font Vila, clarify in this space that “we cannot forget how Cuban science has provided accurate solutions in different times of our history. It is true that nowadays we have technological limitations, but these circumstances move us to be creative and formulate actions that enable resilient communities”.
According to the coordinator of the program, “it concerns us all, that is why the entities, social actors and natural people are summoned to bring in ideas for this proposition”.
