CAMAGÜEY.- In 28 consecutive times, since 1991, Cuba has stated before the international community our claim to end Washington’s hostile policy against Havana. The last time, this Thursday, evidenced that the international support has not stopped.
In spite of the pressures from the American government, 187 countries voted in favor of the resolution “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”, presented before the United Nations General Assembly. The only abstentions were Colombia and Ukraine; while the “No” was only defended by the macabre duet made by the US and Israel, joined this year by the Brazil of Jair Bolsonaro.
Before the voting, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, denounced how Donald Trump’s administration has started in the last few months and aggressive increase in restrictions and sanctions against the economy and the people on this island.
“The blockade causes invaluable humanitarian damages, it constitutes a flagrant, massive and systematic violation of human rights and qualifies as an act of genocide”, affirmed Rodríguez Parrilla in the seat of the United Nations in Washington.
The Cuban chancellor explained in his intervention before the international community that there is no Cuban family that does not suffer the consequences of the blockade. Besides, he stressed the responsibility of the American government for the harmful effects caused by the almost 58 year-old policy, since the former American president John F. Kennedy authorize the cruel strategy on February 1962.
But there was also opportunity to thank the international displays of solidarity with Cuba. “We recognize with great gratitude, all of those who have expressed their rejection of the blockade against our country and those who have come along with us in our non-stop fight to end this policy”, added in his thirty minute long intervention.
According to data revealed by the Cuban chancellery, the blockade has caused quantifiable prejudice of over 138 843, 4 million dollars, at ordinary prizes. The number increases to 922 630 million dollars, if you consider the current depression of the dollar against the value of gold in the international market.
